Water - Agua 2001...
H2O, a mystery, us, most of what we are made of, flowing, for ever changing, transforming, energy, the source or fountain of initiation, purification, cleansing, vital, spiritual, thirst quenching, solid, liquid and lighter than a feather… water is a treasure.
Photographing water as an abstraction, is a way to illustrate that most of our knowledge is an abstract accumulation of cultural beliefs. For example it is believed that our brain is approximately 90% water and that our bodies consist of 80% of the vital liquid. There is no way to live the experience of these scientific truths beyond the realms of our beliefs. We can only believe these abstract concepts are a certainty in the same way that most of what we accept as knowledge, culturally transmitted knowledge, is beyond the limits of our experience and is simply something we believe, and can therefore think about. In fact, we need to believe as much as we need to drink, we want to believe and drink, we need to believe to think and drink to live.
Water, like us, shows itself in many mysterious ways, it is a reminder that the only thing constant in our experience of life is change. Water is as real as we are, as indispensable to our existence as we are, and at the same time, it is as abstract, incomprehensible and mysterious as we are… light and water bond to show their colors, their forms, their story of the perpetual transformation of life. My photographs area homage to this alchemy, to this magic of who we are… and what water is.
